Bass are biting at Birch Grove

NORTHFIELD – The third annual Flora Dickinson Get Hooked on Fishing Not Drugs Fishing Tournament brought 75 young anglers to the lakes of Birch Grove Park in Northfield Saturday. With a little breeze and plenty of prizes, it was a fun day of fishing all the way around.
Jesse McClain, 12, of Northfield hauled in a largemouth bass that measured nearly a foot long and weighed in at nearly a pound. Steve Pagano, 6, of Egg Harbor Township was happy just to hook a sunfish.
It was a good day to spend the morning casting lines and swapping tales about the big one that just nibbled on the hook.
Brian Branca, 9, of Northfield is a fairly seasoned fisherman but the perch he caught managed to get away just as he reeled it in.
“I’ll get him again, I know it,” said the determined youth as he cast his line again.
Many of the children were there with parents, grandparents or friends.
The annual fishing tournament is sponsored by the Friends of Birch Grove Park.
